Called out?

Mon Jul 10, 2017, 4:14 PM
why do all my journal titles sound like clickbait ljhkgjfhdghgjhkjlkgjfh

ANYWAY SO YEAH I was called out 2 days ago, I found out about it today through someone noting me and alerting me about it

Someone anonymously submitted to a blog on tumblr called { artist-grapevine } that they were concerned if I had traced an imageSkarmavbild 2017-07-11 kl. 00.58.29 by R0BUTT

The image they're linking to is this image below

I replied to the post { here }, explaining that it is a study of an image. I'll copy what I said below!

YEAH hi that artist is me, thanks for liking my art!
No, it’s not directly traced, it’s a study of a photograph, the very one you have overlayed my drawing on! I link to the site I found the image on in the drawing
The colors arent copied either, but I carefully tried to make the colors match as much as I possibly could.
Here’s the process of that drawing!

I would just like to say, to the person who submitted this and probably watch me, don't be concerned. I'm not tracing anything.
I even mentioned in the deviation and linked the reference image that I used!
Which is why i am upset - cause I am - and I'll explain below

If you're concerned if someone is tracing someones art, or tracing or stealing or whatever, this is what you SHOULD DO:

TALK to the person. Ask the person about it, show them your proof, and let them explain.

What you probably shouldn't do:

Make a call out post and spread information. It's harmful and, sorry, toxic af. I can understand it's upsetting to see people do things you don't think is right, but causing drama and spreading information that you don't know is true for sure isn't the way to go, sorry.

That being said, I'm not angry this happened, cause I noticed a lot of people understood the case quite immediately and even defended me, which I greatly appreciate!

SO YEAH I JUST WANTED TO HAVE A SAYING IN THIS, SINCE IT'S ABOUT ME AND MY ART AND MY STUDIES!!! THANKS AND I'M OUT!!!!

And if the person who submitted the thing happens to read this:
I'm not angry at you or hate you, I just think you could have dealt with this situation in a better way. This tumblr blog even encourages you actually bring it up with the artist.

An artist friend of mine often did forgeries of famous paintings to improve her skills. I say  that's perfectly fine as long as you don't take credit for or try to sell these things

Like?? Tracing is only bad when you're stealing other people's work?? so what if you had traced?? you weren't claiming credit for anything that wasn't your own, you were doing a study based on someone else's work and that is a long & time honored tradition in art.

I also agree that it's pretty ridiculous to criticize someone for being GOOD at doing their study.  and that people really over-use the "call out post."  it's really just a nicer word for public accusations / shaming, and that's not something you should mess with unless you have PROOF and calling the person out would actually do some good.  (even if someone has done something wrong, shaming them probably isn't the best way to address that.)

But.... Your description said it was just practice and you added a link to your reference.....
Weather it was traced or not seems irrelevant in this case.

that first anon who tried to explain it to the accuser was me
I think what happened was that person either didn't read your description properly or didn't know what a photo study was.
If they watch you and like your art, I don't think they were trying to start up drama like that other anon said. I think they were actually, genuinely concerned but I could be wrong.
I agree though, they should've confronted you about it first instead of taking it to a tumblr blog. :/

aaaa thats a pretty bad misunderstanding
they should of messaged you privately first though to ask for a explanation??? going straight to accusing someone of tracing is a pretty big accusation

And this is why artists freak over trying to learn from others-- (SOMETHING THAT IS COMPLETELY NORMAL AND EVERYONE SHOULD DO STUDIES AND USE. R E F E R E N C E S. thats how you improve folks)
because they're afraid they'll mistaken for a thief or something to that effect.

I know it's all explained in this but gdi i just want everyone to know that referencing/studies are encouraged and very different from claiming art as your own
